Your first month of barbell training in Midvale: what to expect week by week

The first month sets up the next two years. Here is what it actually looks like.

Week 1 — learning the shapes

Empty bar, and often lighter. We build the squat, bench, deadlift, press and row from the ground up. You will feel like the weight is insultingly light. That is the point: we are buying the pattern cheaply.

Week 2 — first real loading

Weight goes on the bar in small jumps. You will be sore in places you did not know were involved. Soreness peaks this week and then largely stops being a factor.

Week 3 — the fast part

This is where new lifters add weight almost every session. It feels like magic. It is mostly your nervous system learning to recruit what you already had, and it is completely normal.

Week 4 — the first real test

We retest the main lifts and write the next block from actual data. Most people are up 40–80 pounds on the deadlift and, more importantly, no longer need to think about where their feet go.

How to not waste the month

  • Show up all four weeks. Consistency beats intensity by a mile at this stage.
  • Eat enough protein and sleep. You are rebuilding, not just training.
  • Film your sets even if nobody asked. You will want the week one video later.
  • Ask why. Every time.

If you are in Midvale, Murray, Sandy or Salt Lake City and want a coached version of this month, book a free consult and we will get you started.
