Bowman Coaching

Online personal trainer vs. in-person coaching: which one actually gets you stronger?

I coach both ways, so I have no incentive to sell you one over the other. Here is how they genuinely differ.

Speed of feedback

In person wins, and it is not close. A cue delivered in the two seconds between reps changes the next rep. Online, the loop is film, upload, wait, read, apply next session. Good online coaching shortens that loop; it never eliminates it.

Rate of technique change

For a brand new lifter, in person is worth roughly triple the money in the first eight weeks. Once the pattern is grooved, video review holds it together fine.

Cost per month

Online coaching costs about what two in-person sessions cost, and it covers every session you train. If budget is the binding constraint, online plus one in-person tune-up per month is the best value combination I know of.

Accountability

This one surprises people: online often wins. A scheduled session is one appointment a week. A logged program with weekly check-ins is a standing expectation for every training day.

Programming quality

Identical. The program does not know where the coach is standing.

So which one?

New to lifting and within driving distance of Midvale: start in person for eight weeks. Experienced and self-sufficient: online, every time. Somewhere in between: online with occasional in-person sessions when the technique gets fiddly.
